Parliamentary Forum On Road Safety To Host The 1st International Convention On Road Safety
The parliamentary forum on road safety is set to host the 1st international convention on road safety where all African countries will participate as well as development partners. This is geared towards sensitizing the public on road safety and benchmarking solutions from other countries.
Africa leads in road carnage deaths across the globe and Uganda is the second in Africa with the highest deaths resulting from road accidents. The road carnage continues to cost the lives of Ugandans with 4000 Ugandans reported dead annually.
These accidents cost Uganda an estimated 4.5 trillion shillings annually. The death trap is not just here in Uganda but in the entire sub-Saharan Africa with Africa leading the global chat.
This has forced members of parliament across the African continent to come together and find a solution to save lives
“It's about us, about every Ugandan. We cannot attend and give attention to Covid and leave out road accidents which take 12 Ugandans on a daily”. Here in Uganda, the government is set to embark on the use of technology to curb the situation.
In July this year, cameras will be deployed on all roads to capture details of all drivers, especially those abusing the roads and culprits reported technologically.
These will facilitate traffic officers who will then issue receipts to culprits that have been reported by the technological system.
“This is a digital arrangement because police can not be everywhere to enforce road discipline. Makes sure where there's no physical police officer then the system can capture you and the police enforce this is to enhance police presence”
If the system is implemented, those constantly violating road use guidelines will see their licenses terminated.
The forthcoming guidelines will also see reckless drivers be held responsible for the lives lost in road accidents.
“Driving licenses should also be terminated for people who violate traffic laws, especially 3 times. The system should be showing your license has been terminated and can't be granted another one
If you kill people you have to be held responsible”. The call precedes the 1st international convention on road carnage slated for tomorrow in Kampala.
The convention will be held under the theme “To realize equitable and prosperous road safety campaign for the present and future generations.” It will be presided over by the deputy speaker of parliament Thomas Tayebwa.
