Persistent Heavy rains irk Kigezi Farmers
With the Hilly nature of the region, the unpredictable weather patterns are making farmers regret.
According to some farmers, the heavy rains have destroyed gardens and for those that had gardens in hills, they were all washed away. This has forced them to feel afraid of any possible famine outbreak in future. They add that even the remaining crops in the gardens have greatly been affected.
POLIKAPU BANYENZAKI (This rain has affected our gardens as farmers, it has swept away all the hills and in future we could be struck by famine. The good farming practices that farmers used to employ back in time have been ignored by most of them leaving us at a greater risk)
Podeciyana Baryazireeta (The rain has completely swept away our gardens. The trees that used to hold the running water were cut down and that is why rain is sweeping our gardens. We shall not survive the famine with this destruction)
Sympson Byamukama (If these rains continue at this pace, we shall be hit by famine. Initially we would be having trees surrounding our plantations but they are all gone)
Some environmentalists in the region attribute the growing challenge to poor agricultural practices. They also condemn poor wetland management practices in the area.
Milton Kwesiga, an Environmental studies lecturer at Uganda Christian University and the Executive director for Africa Disaster Reduction Research and Emergency Missions (ADREEM), a local NGO says that the government needs to wake up and implement conservation policies so as to save the region.
Kigezi sub region which consists of Kabale, Kanungu, Kisoro, Rukungiri, Rukiga and Rubanda districts has of late been affected by inconsistent weather patterns. The region once described as the Switzerland of Africa could lose its original attraction if efforts towards conservation are not improved.
