PFF Questions Chief Justice’s Probe into Nakawa Court Chaos Amid Concerns Over Court Safety & Justice

The immediate investigation ordered by Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo into the violent clash at Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court has sparked skepticism among opposition groups, notably the People's Front for Freedom (PFF). The incident, which resulted in multiple injuries and cast a pall over Dr. Kizza Besigye’s ongoing treason case, has divided public opinion on the judiciary’s role in ensuring safety and justice.

Ssemujju Nganda, Acting Spokesperson for the PFF, expressed concerns over the rising violence in courts, citing it as a recurring problem fueled by alleged supporters of opposition figures like Dr. Besigye. He questioned why the judiciary appears unable or unwilling to safeguard those supporting Besigye, who are reportedly subjected to violence and torture within and around the court premises.

“Court safety should be a priority. It’s the judiciary’s responsibility to maintain order and protect everyone seeking justice. Failure to do so threatens the very foundation of our justice system,” Ssemujju stated.

He further criticized the recent parliamentary decision that allowed civilians to be tried in military courts under the UPDF Amendment Act, noting that such moves could undermine civilian court processes and threaten justice for opposition supporters.

The PFF has vowed to monitor the investigation closely, insisting that justice is paramount, and calls for transparency regarding the circumstances surrounding the Nakawa Court chaos.
