The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has welcomed a proposed amendment to the Administration of Parliament Act that seeks to reform the process for the election and accountability of the Leader of the Opposition. The group also criticized recent remarks by UPC President Jimmy Akena regarding Chief of Defense Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and responded to comments by the Katikkiro of Buganda on arrests linked to alleged hate speech.
The Patriotic League of Uganda has endorsed a Private Member's Bill tabled by Buyaga West Member of Parliament Dennis Namara, describing it as a timely proposal aimed at strengthening accountability in the Office of the Leader of the Opposition.
The Bill, which was granted leave by Parliament, seeks to amend the Administration of Parliament Act and has generated debate among political actors, with some opposition legislators questioning the proposed reforms.
Addressing journalists in Kampala, the Head of the Office of the National Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda, Hon. David Kabanda, welcomed the proposed legislation and congratulated its promoters.
Kabanda said the proposed amendments would strengthen transparency and accountability in the Office of the Leader of the Opposition.
Kabanda also responded to recent remarks by UPC President Jimmy Akena, who accused Chief of Defense Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba of presiding over alleged abductions and killings. Kabanda challenged Akena to present evidence to support the claims.
Kabanda further alleged that Betty Amongi Angom is among officials implicated in corruption investigations and claimed she could face arrest. These are allegations made by Kabanda, and any investigations or legal action remain the responsibility of the relevant authorities.
Kabanda also criticized recent remarks by the Katikkiro of Buganda regarding arrests linked to alleged hate speech, urging him to instead promote unity and peaceful coexistence.
The proposed amendments to the Administration of Parliament Act are expected to come before Parliament for further debate as political parties continue to express differing views on the future of the Office of the Leader of the Opposition.
