Kamwenge district registered the highest number of criminal cases in the Rwenzori West Region in the first quarter of 2023. That is according to a new report released by the police in the Rwenzori West region from its headquarters in Fort Portal City.
The report indicates that out of the 3,101 cases of crime registered in the Rwenzori West police region, Kamwenge District registered 636 cases from January to April 2023 which was the period under review.
The Quarterly Report on Crime in the Rwenzori West police region indicates that Kyenjojo District came second to Kamwenge District in terms of criminal cases reported. There were 551 cases reported in Kyenjojo compared to the 636 cases reported to the police in Kamwenge District.
Vincent Twesige, the Rwenzori West Police Spokesperson, who released the report to journalists, said that murder, simple assault, and cattle theft were the highest registered cases in the region.
In the 2022 Annual Police Crime Report, the Rwenzori West region registered 8,792 cases of crime, an increment from the 7,966 cases registered the previous year. The region also registered 531 cases of cattle theft in 2022.
In the quarterly report for the Rwenzori West region, Kamwenge District also recorded the highest number of cases of cattle theft with 27 cases between January and April 2023.
Police say they have noted connivance and syndicate in the commission of the crimes reported in the region.
The districts of Kabarole, Fort Portal, Kamwenge, Kyenjojo, Kyegegwa, Bunyangabu, Ntoroko, and Bundibugyo form the Rwenzori West Police region.
