Police Warn Public Against Cyber Fraud and Impersonation: Fraudsters Arrested for Posing As First Daughter.Public Urged To Stay Vigilant Against Online Scams
The Uganda Police Force is sounding the alarm over rising cases of cyber fraud and impersonation. This comes after several suspects were arrested for allegedly posing as the First Daughter, Mrs. Natasha Museveni Karugire. Speaking at police headquarters, spokesperson ASP Rusoke Kituuma identified Iganga Municipality as a growing hotspot for such crimes, urging citizens to remain vigilant, report suspicious activity, and ensure proper SIM card registration to safeguard against identity fraud.
The police have issued a warning to the public against impersonation and cyber fraud, following the arrest of several individuals involved in a scheme where they posed as the first daughter, Mrs. Karugire Natasha Museveni. The matter was formally addressed today by police spox, Asp. Rusoke Kituuma, during the weekly press briefing at the police headquarters.
Rusoke noted that Iganga Municipality appears to be emerging as a hotspot for fraudulent activities, citing a repeated pattern of cases. He emphasized the need for increased public sensitization alongside the ongoing arrests of the perpetrators. At the same time, he urged members of the public to continue reporting such incidents, assuring them that the police remain committed and ready to ensure justice is served.
Members of the public were urged to protect themselves by remaining vigilant and alert to potentially fraudulent activities in order to avoid falling victim.
According to the police spokesperson, several challenges have been encountered in addressing these cases. In a bid to prevent such incidents, he emphasized the need for collaboration between telecommunication companies and security agencies to intensify public sensitization further urging the public to ensure that SIM cards are registered in their rightful names, as this measure helps to prevent cases of mistaken identity.
