The president of Uganda H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has promised his full support to the education sector, particularly the teachers. He also said the government is intent on improving Uganda’s education system.
He was in the company of the first lady and minister for education Janet Museveni who promised government’s support to the teachers to see that they deliver well-educated learners for the future. Janet also revealed that her ministry is set to seek parliament to pass a special legislature which will regulate the sector to see that there's the education we want to facilitate the future we need.
This she revealed at Kololo independence grounds where teachers gathered to celebrate the international teachers’ Day.
Teachers and other members of the education sector including Ministers, permanent secretaries and members of the international community have today gathered at Kololo independence grounds to celebrate International Teacher's day. The event has been graced by the president as the chief guest in the company of the first lady who doubles as the minister for education and sports.
This year's teachers’ day is marked under the theme, the teachers we need for the education we want: the global imperative to reverse the teachers’ shortage.’
President Museveni says this theme comes at the right time as the country is set to improve the education system to change lives.
He adds that teachers have for many years failed to improve by copying what is good for the betterment of society.
Museveni asked that teachers be graded according to their performance. This according to the president is a proposal that he made a long time ago in hopes of seeing teachers become better.
In her speech, the Minister for Education underscored the importance of education and teachers in the improvement of the country. She says the 2019 teacher policy approved by the cabinet is set to see that teachers are equipped to deliver the right education to learners.
She now hopes to seek parliament’s support to see that the sector is regulated to meet the country's expectations.
These teachers who are united under different unions advocated for more support from the government to see them upgrade to different levels of education.
They also asked that schools be given staff quarters to help teachers stay around schools for easy access to these schools.
The Minister for Education notes the government has already embarked on it emphasizing that all newly built schools across the country must now have teacher's accommodation.
Six outstanding teacher educators have been awarded for their contribution towards teachers. However, these teachers continue to face challenges especially those in the private sector.
The teachers have asked the government to regulate the sector and curtail exploitation faced by their counterparts in the private sector.
