PWDs Seek Clarification on Allocated 15.5 billion for Them: PWDs Request Government for Increase in Funding Annually

The Uganda Parliamentary Forum on Social Protection, together with the National Union of Disabled Persons and other relative organizations in Uganda, today sought clarification on the 15.5 billion shillings allocated for persons with disabilities and the elderly in this year’s budget after the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development declared contents in the national budget under Article 155 of the Uganda Constitution, passing an 84 trillion shilling budget for the 2026/27 financial year.

They said the funds are meant for children with disabilities aged 2-4 and households in the 15-17 age bracket due to the many difficulties they face, like transportation and other challenges that trouble them.

The same budget will also support 305,000 elderly people below age 80 and above, and in October last year, the cabinet approved a proposal to lower the eligibility age for this elderly grant to 65 so they can benefit from it with the money included.

On this program they’ve asked government to increase the stipend so every senior can actually benefit from it.

NUDIPU wants to amplify their voice as they thank the government for the money set aside, saying the funds should reach every person with a disability. They’re also requesting an increase in the amount disbursed so it can help these people come out of isolation and show that they are valuable members of society.

Speaking on the challenges children with disabilities go through, he put it this way:

He therefore appealed to the government to consider these children in the places where they live or go, such as schools, hospitals, and many other places.

That way, he should also help six-year-old children who are living on the streets.
