Rev. Ven. Michael Chorey Elected 5th Bishop Of The Diocese Of Karamoja

The House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda has elected Rev. Ven. Michael Chorey as the 5th Bishop of the Diocese of Karamoja. 

He will be consecrated on 25th August, succeeding Rt. Rev. Joseph Abura. Rev. Chorey, currently the Archdeacon of Pokot Archdeaconry, holds advanced degrees in Theology and is completing his PhD. 

Alongside his wife, he has planted 24 churches, demonstrating a strong commitment to community development.

The House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda, meeting at Lweza Training and Conference Centre today the 4th of July 2024, has elected Rev. Ven. Michael Chorey as the 5th Bishop of the Diocese of Karamoja. 

He will be consecrated and enthroned on 25th August 2024 at St. Philip's Cathedral in Moroto, succeeding Rt. Rev. Joseph Abura, who has served since 27th May 2007 is the Dean of the Province of the Church of Uganda.

Born on 10th April 1970 in Dingdinga village, now Katabok Sub-county in Amudat District, Rev. Ven. Chorey embraced his faith on 12th May 1986 at a school fellowship. 

He was ordained as a Deacon on 13th July 2003 and became a priest on 18th December 2005. He started his ministry as a Lay Reader from 1995 to 2000 and has been the Archdeacon of Pokot Archdeaconry and the Parish Priest for Christ Church Amudat Parish since 1st April 2012.

Rev. Ven. Chorey is married to Rev. Canon Jane Chorey, and together they have planted 24 churches under the Pokot Archdeaconry. He holds a Master of Arts in Theology and Development and a Bachelor of Divinity from Uganda Christian University. He is nearing completion of his PhD in Theology and Development at the same institution.

His extensive training includes monitoring and evaluating HIV/AIDS, basic Trainer of Trainers (TOT) for advocacy, peace, and small arms monitoring. He also attended leadership training at the Anglican Leadership Institute in South Carolina, USA. 

Rev. Ven. Chorey has translated important documents, including manuals for Alternative Basic Education for Karamoja, the Parliamentary Act of 2010 prohibiting female genital mutilation, and various materials on HIV/AIDS, drugs, and neglected diseases.

Rev. Ven. Michael Chorey's dedication to his faith and community makes him a distinguished leader for the Diocese of Karamoja.
