Rubanda Authorities Take Action To Restore Degraded Wetlands

In a proactive move, authorities in the Rubanda district have launched a comprehensive campaign to restore degraded wetlands in the district.

The initiative kicked off in the Karukara-Kanyambugo wetland in the Muko sub-county, where collaborative efforts between authorities and local residents led to the removal of crops and trees that had encroached upon the wetland.

To address wetland-related issues, especially in regions like Bukedi-Busoga and Kigezi, Museveni advised farmers to vacate unconditionally, characterizing their presence in these areas as a mistake. He specified that indigenous residents within 100 meters of lake shores and riverbanks must relocate, with exceptions granted to factories already established on wetlands.

Jane Amumpaire, the Natural Resources Officer for Rubanda district, highlighted that extensive community sensitization efforts have been underway to educate locals about the importance of wetland restoration. She emphasized the community's willingness to support authorities in this crucial environmental preservation endeavor.

Amumpaire pointed out that a staggering 95% of the wetlands in the Rubanda district have already faced degradation, underscoring the urgent need for restoration measures.

Eric Ssewandigi, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner for Rubanda, who oversaw the campaign launch, stated that they are acting in accordance with a Presidential directive that mandates leaders to ensure the restoration of wetlands. He issued a warning to locals resistant to the initiative, cautioning against any efforts to impede the campaign's progress.

While the campaign has garnered support from some members of the public who applaud the initiative, there are mixed reactions, with some individuals expressing concerns and requesting more time to prepare for potential eviction from wetland areas.

The President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, underscored the critical importance of protecting environmental assets during the 61st Independence Day celebrations in Kitgum district. Museveni emphasized that assets such as wetlands, forests, rivers, lakes, and water towers are vital for providing essential life-sustaining resources like air, water, and food, and therefore must be safeguarded. Reports indicate a concerning 30 percent decline in the national area of wetlands in Uganda between 1994 and 2008.
