Ruto Confirms Raila Odinga's Death In National Address

In a national address from State House, Nairobi President William Ruto confirmed the passing of the late opposition leader and former Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga. The President declared a seven-day period of national mourning in honor of Raila Odinga’s legacy.

President Ruto described Odinga as one of Kenya’s foremost statesmen and a towering figure in Africa’s political landscape.

He praised Raila’s lifelong dedication to justice, democracy and national unity, extending heartfelt condolences and urging Kenyans to unite in solidarity during this difficult time of loss.

Following the untimely demise of Kenya’s former Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, aged 80, President William Ruto confirmed his death today during a national address at State House. He referred to Raila as a foremost national statesman and one of the continent’s greatest sons.

He added that Raila’s legacy in Kenya will forever remain etched in the history of the nation for his decade-long pursuit of justice and equity.

President Ruto extended his deepest condolences to Mama Ida and the entire Raila family, led by Oburu Oginga, the late’s brother.

He declared a 7 day mourning period to honour the late and implored the country to unite in the face of the trying time of bereavement.

Raila Odinga was one of Kenya's most influential and enduring political figures, despite five unsuccessful presidential bids. For years, he stood out as a staunch campaigner and defender of multi-party democracy. His death not only marks the end of an era for a towering pan-Africanist but also leaves a significant void in Kenya's opposition as the country approaches the 2027 elections.
