Speaker Anita Among Leads Wealth Public Declaration

The Speaker of Parliament, the Inspector General of Government, and the two deputies have declared their wealth publicly as required by Section 31 (7) of the Leadership Code Act.

During the event held at the Speaker’s Boardroom at Parliament, the Rt. Hon. Among urged other public officers to adhere to the law and declare their wealth within the stipulated deadline of the end of March 2023.

She noted that this will send a powerful message that the Government is committed to fighting corruption.

The Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among led by example when she publicly declared her wealth in her office at the Parliamentary buildings. She joins a group of 34,000 political leaders, appointed leaders, and civil servants who are expected to declare their wealth this year. This exercise happens every two years, in fulfillment of the Leadership Code Act. Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja officially launched the 2023 wealth declaration exercise in Lira City on 01st March 2023. Public leaders have until 31st March to comply.

Speaker Among’s wealth declaration was witnessed by the two Deputy Inspectors General of Government – Dr. Patricia Achan Okiria and Anne Twinomugisha Muhairwe.

Thereafter, the two deputy IGGs also declared their wealth and also uploaded onto the online wealth declaration system the information provided by their boss, IGG Beti Olive Kamya. The Rt. Hon. Speaker Anita Among also witnessed these wealth declarations as required by the law.

Dr. Okiria said that the declaration of wealth by leaders is an important tool in helping to prevent corruption and detect illicit enrichment and conflict of interest.

The Speaker wondered why people in public leadership positions who are paid by taxpayers would hide their wealth in other people’s names yet they have an important role to play not only in fighting corruption but also showing exemplary leadership.

The Rt. Hon, Among pledged that Parliament would support the office of the Inspectorate of Government to ensure that they get the required funds to effectively and efficiently carry out their mandate across the country.
