Speaker Asks Gov’t To Raise Budget For Road Works, Maintenance
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Among has asked Members of Parliament to appropriate funds in the budget to cover road infrastructure across the country.
This follows the breakdown of the Katonga Bridge on River Katonga less than a week ago and traffic had to be diverted to alternative roads. According to the Speaker, if such roads are not attended to, business can come to a standstill since vehicles will have to be grounded.
Motorists heading to Masaka must now move through the Mpigi-Gomba Sembabule road, which is a much longer distance.
In her communication during today’s plenary sitting, the speaker of parliament Anita Among challenged legislators to start thinking of budgeting for these roads without waiting for the worst.
The budget, according to the Speaker, should not focus on Katonga Bridge but on the entire country
Members of Parliament especially from Masaka and surroundings have decried activities in Lwera which they say are behind such scenarios. Lwera has seen several people turn it into rice firms and sand mining area
The government is said to have held several meetings to find a solution to the situation at Katonga Bridge. The State Minister for Industry David Bahati says resources have been mobilized and work on the bridge is expected to begin soon.
Climate change has seen regions across the country receive unexpected heavy rains. In some parts like Kisoro District, lives have been lost.
