St Leo's Beats Kahinju Ss To Win Toro Rwenzori Regional Debate Tournament

St Leo's College Kyegobe won the Toro Rwenzori regional debate tournament that was over the weekend organized at Kyebambe Girls secondary school in Fort Portal.

The competitions organized by the Uganda Aids Commission attracted a total of 400 participants from 40 schools in the region.

This year’s theme rotated around the role of young people in the achievement of Vision 2030 and ending HIV stigma.

The participants argued on whether mothers that give birth to children infected with HIV should be sued or not.

Some of the debaters agreed with this insisting that it will serve as a lesson to all parents to always go for antenatal care so that they can reduce the risks of mother-to-child transmission.

Figures from UNICEF indicate that children below the age of 15 account for 11 per cent of the 1.6 million Ugandans living with HIV as of 2013 estimates.

However, the same figures indicate that there has been a significant drop in new mother-to-child HIV infections, from 8.7 per cent in September 2012 to 7.9 per cent in 2017.

Preliminary data from the 2016 Uganda Population-based HIV Impact Assessment shows an 18 per cent decline in HIV prevalence in the general population from 7.3 per cent in 2011 to 6.0 per cent in 2016.

St Leo's College Kyegobe emerged victorious after out Kahinju secondary school to take this year’s trophy.
