Stakeholders Urged To Intensify Road Safety Education:Public Urged To Champion Road Safety.

Road carnage remains one of Uganda’s most pressing public safety challenges, with reckless driving and overspeeding continuing to endanger lives. The Transport Ministry is stepping up enforcement in sensitive areas such as schools and hospitals, while road safety advocates are urging stronger action to protect communities.

According to the latest Uganda Police Force Annual Crime Report, 5,383 lives were lost to road traffic accidents in 2025. Authorities are urging the public to strictly observe road safety rules, while calling on stakeholders to intensify education and awareness campaigns for motorists.

Despite a government directive limiting speed to 30 km/hr in special zones such as schools, hospitals, and other sensitive areas, motorists continue to raise concerns about the restrictions. The Ministry of Transport has responded firmly, warning that reckless drivers caught speeding will be apprehended and their vehicles or bicycles impounded.

In an exclusive interview, Maria Nansasi, the In‑Country Coordinator of the Uganda Road Safety Program, emphasized the urgent need for precautionary measures to curb the rising number of crashes.

She appealed to stakeholders to prioritize road safety as a national cause, stressing that safer roads are essential to protecting lives and sustaining development.

As the statistics continue to paint a worrying picture, road safety advocates insist that saving lives must become a shared responsibility. Stakeholders are being urged to step up education and enforcement, ensuring that Uganda’s roads are safe.
