Taxi Parks Register Low Passenger Turn Up:Ebola Threat Affects Public Transport Economy.Transport Costs Remain High Due To Fuel Prices.
Due to the Ebola threat that saw Martyr’s Day celebrations cancelled by the government, those in the transport business, particularly those ferrying passengers, registered low passenger turnout today. They follow the health guidelines given by the government to prevent the disease from spreading further.
The transport teams reveal that fuel prices remain very high right now, which has caused a hike in transport fares.
Due to the conflict in the Middle East, fuel prices have remained a challenge, and those in the transport business, specifically Kampala central, reveal that this is why fares have gone up.
Every martyr’s day, on the 3rd of June, pilgrims from all over the world gather at the Namugongo site to commemorate the day. However, it was not business as usual this year as there was an outbreak in neighbouring Congo.
For these reasons, the transporters registered low turnout today, and we spoke to them about the situation.
A driver revealed that while fuel prices are high, other stages have only increased fares today because it’s Namugongo Day
When we spoke to the chairperson of taxi drivers in the Old Taxi Park about some of the things they have done to keep reminding their people to protect themselves from the Ebola disease, this is what he had to say
The scientific celebrations at Namugongo went on as planned with clergy, dignitaries and just a few people being let in to witness the day's business
