Tears As Uganda Bible Society CEO Mukhama Is Buried In Mbale

Emotions ran high in Nabumali, Mbale City as the General Secretary of the Bible Society of Uganda, Simon Peter Mukhama was laid to rest at his ancestral home in Nabumali, Mbale City.

Mukhama suddenly passed away at Mengo Hospital after a short illness on 12th May 2023. Mourners were told that he died of health complications, including diabetes and a mild respiratory infection.

Mukhama was eulogized as a man who over the years, had become the epitome of popularizing the Bible and working to have every household have a copy of the Holy Book with an inspiring message.

The Christian fraternity in the country continues to mourn the passing of Simon Peter Mukhama, the General Secretary of the Bible Society of Uganda. During the requiem service and his burial in Nabumali, Mbale City, several mourners eulogized Mukhama, describing him as a simple, creative, selfless, humble servant of God.

Mukhama’s widow narrated that he passed away on the morning of Friday 12th May at Mengo Hospital, Kampala where had been rushed for treatment after getting respiratory complications.

Mukhama died four days before the celebration of his silver jubilee or 25 years of marriage to his wife, Ruth Mukhama. The event had been set for 16th May 2023 at Nabumali Holy Trinity Church in Mbale City.

The Bishop of Bukedi Diocese, the Rt. Rev. Samuel George Bogere Egesa led the requiem service alongside the Rt. Rev. John Wilson Nandah, the Bishop of Mbale Diocese.
Several Anglican bishops and other religious leaders of COU from across the country, including the Archbishop Emeritus C.O.U, and the Most Rev. Stanley Ntagali attended Mukhama’s send-off.

The Most Rev. Stanley Ntagali requested that the new Bible House be renamed to Simon Mukhama Bible House upon completion, in memory of Mukhama’s dedication to popularizing the Bible and the message it carries.

Mukhama was the head of the Bible Society of Uganda for over 10 years. He is credited for launching a braille Bible for the blind and publishing a bilingual bible in Spanish and English that President Yoweri Museveni presented to Pope Francis during his visit to Uganda in 2015.

Mukhama was born and raised in Mbale, got involved in youth leadership and actively took part in church activities as a young man.

He attended Nabumali Primary School, and Nabumali High School then joined Makerere University where he pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.

He later attained a Masters's degree in Business Administration and pursued a doctorate in Business Administration, majoring in leadership at Walden University in the US.
