Teso Leaders Call For Review Of Traditional Practice Of Widow Inheritance:Call Made During Community Engagement Organized By Redeem International.Creates Awareness On Property Rights Of Widow
Leaders in the Teso sub-region are calling for a shift away from the traditional practice of widow inheritance, saying changing social realities and Uganda's laws require greater respect for the rights and choices of widows. Police and other government officials pledged support and protection to victims. These are the details
Leaders, legal experts, and law enforcement officers made the call during a community engagement organized by Redeem International to educate communities on the property rights of widows, widowers, and orphans.
The meeting focused on the traditional Iteso practice known as Airum Aberu, where the younger brother of a deceased man is expected to inherit his widow.
Participants noted that although the custom was historically intended to provide protection and support for families, it should not be imposed against a widow's will.
The meeting also heard that Uganda's Constitution guarantees every widow the freedom to decide whether or not to remarry and that no family member has the right to force such decisions.
Police further warned that some relatives exploit grieving families by pressuring widows into relationships in an attempt to take over the deceased's property. Widows facing such intimidation were encouraged to report the matter to local authorities for protection.
Redeem International says it will continue working with law enforcement and community leaders to protect widows and orphans from land grabbing and other forms of property abuse while promoting awareness of their legal rights.
