There Is Room For Improvement In Uganda’s Elections – Akena
The President of the Uganda People’s Congress Hon Akena Jimmy has announced that he will be handing over power as UPC party president in July 2025. By then, he will have served in the leadership position for ten years since he took over power in 2015.
During a press conference held today at the party headquarters at Uganda House, Akenna advised that as the country is preparing for the 2026 general elections, the electoral commission should be considerate and aim at keeping peace and unity in the country.
The Uganda People's Congress was founded in 1960 by Dr Milton Obote, who led the country to independence and later served two presidential terms under the party's banner. UPC is currently under the leadership of party president Jimmy Akenna Obote, who has today announced that he will not be seeking office after the end of his term in July 2025. He will have served in that office for 10 years by then after he took over power in 2015.
Come 2026, political party leaders from different positions will be waiting for the change of leadership. UPC president Hon Akenna has assured the public how ready and organized they are for the upcoming general elections. He notes that MP Elect Eunice Otuko Apio being declared the winner of the Oyam County North by-elections gave them the confidence to tighten their seatbelts as a party.
The Electoral Commission strongly condemns acts of violence as intolerant, unacceptable and criminal according to Hon Akenna because it infringes on the rights of citizens. He says as UPC, they are concerned about the loss of lives of people during the campaigns and elections.
The UPC fraternity is ready to welcome any changes in their party.
