Three Women Arrested In Kampala Over Protest On Women’s Day

As the rest of Uganda celebrates International Women’s Day with the main celebrations in Katakwi District, Police in Kampala have arrested three women protesting the continued police brutality.

Currently detained at Jinja Road Police are the individuals identified as Annet Namata Mwafrika, Asara Night, and Arinaitwe Phiona.

These accuse the police of using excessive powers on women activists and also demand the compensation that the court ordered police to pay to Namata over damaging her uterus in 2019.

Today Uganda has joined the rest of the world in commemorating International Women’s Day with the main event taking place in Katakwi District.

However, in Kampala, the Police have found themselves in a stalemate with women's rights advocates who were protesting the continuous brutality inflicted upon women by the Uganda police.

Among their demands to the Inspector General of Police includes compensation for Annet Mwafirika, as mandated by the Court following the injury to her uterus in 2019. Furthermore, there is a demand for the prompt cessation of police brutality and other associated requests.

Speaking to journalists, Nana Mwafrika, a human rights defender and police torture victim expressed her dissatisfaction over the failure to be paid by the police. Nana says she owes police a sum amounting to over 43m Uganda Shillings.

They condemned the police behaviour of deliberately refusing to compensate the torture victims even after the court rulings.

These have branded the International Women’s Day celebrations in Katakwi as a mere waste of taxpayers' money. They now want the day to be celebrated in every district collectively without being discriminative.

Exchanging words with police, these women questioned the entity’s conduct towards the women.

In a little while, these were arrested and taken to Jinja Road Police Station.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire confirmed the arrest of the three saying the protest was out of order.
