Traffic Police Extends Fika Salama Operations To All Main Roads
Traffic police have intensified Fika Salama operations including the Entebbe expressway and all major roads across the country.
The operations are meant to reduce increased fatal, serious and minor accidents on the roads according to the traffic police spokesperson, Micheal Kananura.
Kananura told journalists that offenders of the traffic guidelines will have their fingerprints captured and shared with Interpol to prevent them from committing the same crimes when they go abroad.
fatal, serious and minor accidents continue to occur on Ugandan roads both uptown and downtown and some of these accidents claim the lives of Ugandans, placing accidents among the top five leading causes of death in the country.
Efforts like Kawunyemu commonly known, as fika Salama operations and other operations have been put up on various roads to reduce these accidents.
The lead causes of accidents according to police include overspeeding and careless overtaking. These operations were launched earlier this week and are set to be intensified. The operations also mainly cover the Entebbe expressway.
Drivers have been warned against overspeeding with passenger vehicles limited to 80Km per hour along the highways and 50Km per hour in occupied areas. Traffic police spokesperson Michael Kannura says several checkpoints with speed guns are going to be mounted along the roads where culprits of overspeeding will be apprehended or issued express penalties.
These will be coupled with checkpoints at night commonly known as Kawunyemu where emphasis will be put on drunk driving.
Police say sufficient breathalyzers have been procured and the operations will begin with immediate effect.
Culprits of these crimes are set to have their details captured and shared with international police making it difficult for them to access certain services, especially cross border.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has advised road users especially drivers and cyclists to go for routine eye checkups. The test that’s done when one is getting a driving permit is said to be critical if road accidents are to be reduced.
Roads like Ggaba Road, Entebbe Road, Kira Road, and Entebbe Expressway among others have been highlighted as those prone to accidents.
