UEDCL Accelerates Power Expansion: 225,000 New Connections & Transformation Drive in Uganda
Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) is making bold strides in its mission to modernize and expand electricity access across the country. Over the past 57 days, UEDCL has already replaced 116 dilapidated transformers in just two months, signaling a strong commitment to improving reliability and service quality. The company has set an ambitious target to connect 225,000 new customers within the next eight months, aligning with the new distribution license granted by the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) on December 31, 2024.
During a media briefing at the Uganda Media Centre, UEDCL officials shared updates on their rapid workforce mobilization across 100 service centers nationwide. Thanks to a comprehensive mass hiring process, 96% of employees have been onboarded and deployed, with specialized skills being recruited externally for the remaining positions.
Spokesperson Jonan Kiiza explained that these efforts are part of UEDCL’s broader strategy to deliver reliable, quality electricity. Meanwhile, Isaac Mufumbiro, the Head of Strategy, addressed recent price changes following Umeme’s exit six months ago, clarifying that domestic customers' contribution to price variations has dropped to 40%.
Additionally, Eng. Joselyne Rwabwogo discussed ongoing load shedding challenges in Kabale and Mpiigi, citing power theft as a key obstacle. Despite these hurdles, UEDCL remains steadfast in its goal to build a dependable and secure electricity distribution network, emphasizing resilience, long-term vision, and customer satisfaction.
