Uganda’s Agricultural Transformation Gains Momentum: Sasakawa Africa Promotes Mixed Farming and Sustainable Practices

Uganda’s journey towards agricultural transformation is picking up speed, driven by targeted efforts from the Sasakawa Africa Association. Recently, a high-profile tour of projects in the districts of Jinja, Buikwe, and Kamuli highlighted the growing adoption of mixed farming as a key strategy to increase household incomes and boost food security.

Led by President Shuichi Suzuki, Sasakawa officials, alongside representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and private sector partners, observed encouraging progress. Farmers are embracing innovative and sustainable farming practices, with many turning to mixed cropping and regenerative agriculture to diversify income streams.

However, challenges remain. Farmers face obstacles such as limited access to inputs, financing, and reliable market information. In response, Sasakawa is actively facilitating connections between farmers and financial institutions, supporting market access, and strengthening the entire agricultural value chain.

Private sector actors like Charles Lubega Masengere are partnering with Sasakawa to support farmers in cultivating crops such as maize, rice, and cassava for both local and export markets. The tour wrapped up in Buikwe District, where farmers showcased initiatives in youth empowerment and sustainable farming solutions that are transforming communities.

This ongoing collaborative effort aims to make agriculture a more profitable, sustainable, and inclusive sector in Uganda—paving the way for a brighter future for farmers and the nation’s food security.
