Uganda has officially declared the end of the 2026 Ebola disease outbreak after completing the mandatory 42-day monitoring period without recording any new cases. Health Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi made the announcement at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala, saying the country is now Ebola-free but remains on high alert because of the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Ministry of Health says the Ebola outbreak was successfully contained through intensive surveillance, rapid response systems, and close collaboration between health workers, communities, and development partners. The Ministry has urged the public, especially those living in border communities, to remain vigilant and report any suspected Ebola cases immediately.

According to the Minister of Health, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the outbreak registered 20 confirmed cases, 18 recoveries, and two deaths. He attributed the successful response to strong investments in public health systems, rapid case detection, contact tracing, and enhanced surveillance.

Despite the declaration, the ministry says the risk of Ebola remains because of the ongoing outbreak in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo. Government says surveillance and preparedness measures will continue, particularly in border districts, while members of the public are urged to report illegal border crossings and suspected Ebola symptoms.

Uganda strengthened its Ebola response by expanding laboratory capacity, training more health workers, increasing public awareness, and establishing treatment centers. Officials say these investments have enhanced the country's ability to respond to future disease outbreaks while strengthening the overall health system.

The ministry says Uganda's response relied on rapid testing, isolation centers, experienced health workers, and a coordinated emergency response system. Officials add that the experience has further strengthened the country's capacity to manage future outbreaks using locally available resources.

The Ministry of Health says surveillance and preparedness measures will remain in place across the country, especially in high-risk border areas, to ensure Uganda can quickly detect and respond to any future Ebola threat while safeguarding the country's Ebola-free status.
