Uganda Launches National ID Registration & Renewal Drive with New Anti-Forgery Technology πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬πŸ†”

The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) is set to launch an extensive national ID registration and renewal exercise starting on 27th, targeting over 15.8 million IDs nearing expiry and registering 17.2 million new citizens. This large-scale effort aims to strengthen national security and improve access to essential services.

Urgency of the Exercise
Speaking at the media center, NIRA’s Executive Director, Rosemary Kisembo, emphasized the importance of the campaign. While most IDs are due to expire in June 2025, some have already expired, making immediate renewal crucial for citizens' legal and civic participation.

Key Highlights:

  • The exercise will involve over 27.7 million existing IDs up for renewal, alongside newly registering unregistered citizens.
  • Citizens are urged to visit their nearest registration centers, bringing the necessary documents.
  • The new IDs will feature advanced security elements, including a multi-laser image embedded within the polycarbonate card to prevent forgery and duplication.

Community Mobilization & Local Involvement
Kisembo highlighted that local leaders, including LC1 Chairpersons, will play a vital role in mobilizing communities, communicating schedules, and guiding households through the registration process at the district level.

Enhanced Security & Biometric Features
The updated IDs will incorporate new biometric features such as iris scanning, alongside existing security enhancements, to safeguard identity integrity.

This initiative is vital for the country’s electoral processes, social services, and national security. All citizens are strongly encouraged to participate in the registration or renewal process promptly.
