Uganda Launches Peace Campaign Ahead of 2026 Elections, Urges Responsible Media and Electoral Integrity

Uganda Embarks on National Peace Initiative Ahead of 2026 Elections

The Inter-Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU) has officially launched a nationwide mobilization campaign focused on peace, social cohesion, and electoral integrity in anticipation of the 2026 general elections. The campaign aims to foster unity and responsible civic participation across the country.

During the launch event, The Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, Chairperson of the IRCU and Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, underscored the critical need for unity among Ugandans and emphasized that the elections must be peaceful and transparent. He strongly condemned the spread of false news, calling on journalists and online influencers to exercise responsibility in their reporting to prevent misinformation that could destabilize the electoral process.

“The role of spiritual leaders is vital in guiding communities and serving as custodians of moral authority during these crucial times,” Bishop Samuel Kazimba Mugalu stated. He also urged media practitioners and social media influencers to act responsibly and avoid spreading misleading information.

Addressing the gathering, Bishop Joshua Lewere, National Overseer of the Pentecostal and Evangelical Association, highlighted that the mobilization efforts primarily focus on fostering social cohesion within communities, ensuring that grassroots voices are heard and unity is maintained.

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Justice Simon Byamukama, emphasized the importance of adhering to electoral laws and the constitution during the electoral period. His call is aimed at ensuring political parties operate within legal boundaries to safeguard the integrity of the elections.

This initiative comes amid concerns about past electoral violence, which resulted in injuries and loss of life, particularly among the youth. With the 2026 elections approaching, Ugandans are being urged to prioritize peaceful coexistence, responsible media, and adherence to electoral laws as key pillars for a successful democratic process.
