Uganda Set for Presidential Swearing-In as Museveni Begins New Term: Gov’t Outlines Security, Protocol for May 12 Inauguration. Museveni Hosts Cabinet Farewell as Uganda Prepares for Swearing

Uganda is set for a pivotal moment in its political calendar as President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni prepares to be sworn in on May 12, 2026, for a new term following his January 15 electoral victory readiness revealed just a day after the president hosted a farewell luncheon for the outgoing Cabinet at State House Entebbe, where he praised their role in steering the country’s socio-economic transformation.

Since gaining independence on October 9, 1962, Uganda has had nine heads of state, with much of its early history shaped by political instability, including coups and civil unrest.

The 12th May 2026 ceremony will mark President Museveni’s seventh swearing-in under an electoral mandate, having previously taken oath in 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021, in addition to assuming power in 1986.

Addressing the media on the same, Minister for the Presidency, Hon. Milly Babalanda, linked the current leadership to Uganda’s historical struggle for stability, rooted in the National Resistance Movement’s ten-point program.

She highlighted Uganda’s transition into a cycle of regular elections, noting that the January 15, 2026 polls reaffirm the country’s adherence to constitutional governance.

Babalanda also pointed to strides in economic growth and industrial development, emphasizing improved livelihoods as Uganda advances beyond least developed country status.

On security, she underscored firm measures to safeguard the ceremony, warning that any attempts to disrupt the event will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

The ceremony is expected to attract regional heads of state, Members of Parliament, and other dignitaries, while nationwide prayers have also been organised to spiritually prepare the country.

Meanwhile, NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong welcomed the election outcome, describing it as a reflection of political stability and continuity.

He noted that the ruling party’s strong performance across leadership levels signals confidence in its governance agenda.

In the same line, at State House Entebbe yesterday, President Museveni, during a farewell luncheon for the outgoing Cabinet, commended ministers for their service and contribution to Uganda’s transformation journey.

He described the team as instrumental in guiding Uganda toward middle-income status through discipline, commitment, and collective effort.

The President also recognised their role in the recent elections, calling the outcome a shared success and expressing optimism for continued growth in the new term.

He concluded by urging leaders to uphold integrity, accountability, and patriotism in public service.

As Uganda counts down to May 12th, attention now shifts to the swearing-in ceremony seen not only as a constitutional requirement, but a defining moment for continuity, governance, and the country’s next phase of development.
