Uganda Urged To Increase Rice Production To Meet Growing Demand:Traders Call For More Investment In Commercial Rice Farming.Stakeholders Push For Modern Technology To Boost Output
As Uganda's demand for rice continues to outpace local production, traders and processors are calling for increased investment in commercial rice farming to bridge the supply gap, reduce dependence on imports, and strengthen the country's food security. Stakeholders say Uganda has the potential to meet domestic demand if more farmers embrace modern rice production technologies and large-scale cultivation.
Uganda's demand for rice continues to rise as changing consumer preferences, population growth, and urbanization increase the consumption of the staple food across the country.
Despite the growing market, traders say local rice production remains insufficient, forcing some businesses to source supplies from neighboring countries to bridge the gap.
The concern comes at a time when agriculture contributes nearly a quarter of Uganda’s Gross Domestic Product and remains the largest source of employment for millions of Ugandans.
Rice traders and processors argue that the country has the potential to become self-sufficient in rice production if more farmers embrace commercial farming and adopt modern agricultural practices.
Speaking to COU Family TV, rice importer and manufacturer Ssenyoga John Bosco said Uganda is currently producing less rice than the market demands, creating opportunities for farmers willing to invest in the crop.
According to stakeholders, Northern and Eastern Uganda remain the leading rice-producing regions in the country, but production levels are still below national demand.
Ssenyonga says greater investment in improved seed varieties, irrigation systems, mechanization, and farmer training could significantly increase yields while improving household incomes.
He noted that increasing local production would not only reduce dependence on imported rice but would also stabilize prices, create employment opportunities, and strengthen Uganda's economy.
He further encouraged farmers to view rice growing as a commercial enterprise capable of generating sustainable income and improving livelihoods.
He also advised institutions such as schools, hospitals, and other large consumers to purchase and store food supplies in bulk ahead of expected seasonal price increases.
He maintains that with the right investments and support, Uganda can substantially increase its rice production, meet domestic demand, and position itself as a competitive supplier within the regional market.
According to research, Rice consumption in Uganda is growing rapidly at about 4% annually. Driven by urbanization and changing dietary habits, urban dwellers consume about 15 kg per capita yearly compared to 8 kg in rural areas. Total annual demand reaches up to 350,000 metric tons, far exceeding local production
As demand continues to grow, traders say the future of Uganda's rice industry will depend on expanding production, embracing modern farming technologies, and supporting farmers to transition from subsistence to commercial agriculture.
