UMEME To Invest 12 Billion Shillings In Revamping Power Lines In Busoga Sub Region

UMEME Limited has unveiled a 12 Billion Shillings plan to revamp electricity power lines within Busoga sub region.

UMEME says the development is aimed at ensuring timely power supply within the sub region, so as to improve productivity in both the manufacturing and services sectors.

According to the plan, UMEME will also upgrade most of the low voltage transformers, so as to meet the electricity power demands within the developing trading centers and town councils in the sub region. The refurbishment works which start next month are expected to be concluded in November, 2022.

Managing director of UMEME limited, Selestino Babungi says the funds will aid the refurbishment of largely the Iganga-Kibimba line, Jinja-Kamuli line and the Lugazi power line where most of the equipment is now old and worn out.

Babungi says the project will also involve installation of concrete poles in swampy areas, where power supply is prone to interruption due to collapsing wooden poles along the electricity power lines.

He adds that automatic switches along different parts of the power line will be installed to enable supervising engineers to only fix anomalies in affected areas and minimize power supply disruptions in the safe areas.

Babungi notes that the refurbished power lines will provide a stable working environment, with improved power supply reliability for both industrialists and domestic users. He further says that this development will control energy loses accrued from unstable power supply.

The chairperson of Millers in Iganga district, Abubaker Walubi says unstable power supply had contributed to fluctuating prices of produce. He however says the expected revamping of the power lines will definitely increase production and help to stabilize market prices.
