Uncovered Mining Holes Destroy Rivers In Kisoro
Kisoro District Deputy RDC Robert Tukamuheibwa has expressed the need for more conservation in the district to save people from being hit by natural calamities. Robert Tukamuheibwa expressed the concern following the appeal of the Nyanamo Community Conservation and Development Organization Limited (NCCDO) over the continuous encroachment of River Ruhezamyenda and Kazogo Pocket Forests both in Nyanamo Town Council in Kisoro District.
According to Robert Tukamuheibwa, Kisoro district is rich in different types of minerals especially in the Nyanamo town council however the district is facing a challenge of different companies who come to do mining but don’t cover the mining holes of which the spill Overs have destroyed rivers in the area. He thanked the work being done by NCCDO for conserving the environment by planting indigenous plants to curb Carbon in the area. He adds that he is coordinating with mining companies to find possible ways of eradicating this challenge.
According to Mudanga Vicent, the Kisoro District natural resources officer, Kisoro being one of the top mineralized districts, this has attracted many people, especially around River Rwezamyenda. He says that as the district they are in partnership with locals in the area and other NGOs to conserve River Rwezamyenda by planting trees around it and discouraging other human activities on this river like Gold mining taking place in Bukimbiri.
Tuhimbaze Lameki, Chairperson for Nyanamo Community Conservation and Development Organization Limited(NCCDO) noted that as one way of conserving River Rwezanyinda, NCCDO has planted over twelve thousand indigenous trees across Kisoro District. He says that they planted over three thousand indigenous trees at Kazogo Pocket forests along River Rwezamyenda which covers twenty acres of land.
Other Conservation activists of Nyanamo Town Council explained their roles in conserving and maintaining the natural resources around their area.
