UNEB to release 2025 UCE results this friday
The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) is set to publish the 2025 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) results this Friday, February 13, in a ceremony scheduled for 11 a.m. at State House Nakasero. The release follows a formal briefing to Education Minister Janet Museveni, a procedural step that precedes the public announcement of national examination outcomes.
The forthcoming results represent the second batch of national examinations to be announced in the current academic cycle, coming shortly after the release of the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) results. However, the UCE results carry particular weight this year due to their policy and institutional significance.
A test for the new UNEB board
This will be the first major undertaking for UNEB’s newly inaugurated 13-member governing board, chaired by Prof. Celestino Obua, who was recently reappointed. The board assumed office earlier this week and now faces the immediate responsibility of overseeing a smooth and credible release process.
The leadership transition places added focus on the integrity, transparency, and operational efficiency of the national examinations body at a time when public confidence in assessment standards remains a central concern.
Measuring the competency-based curriculum
Beyond administration, the 2025 UCE results are also a key indicator of how Uganda’s competency-based curriculum is performing. This cohort is only the second group of candidates to sit examinations under the revised framework, which emphasizes practical skills and continuous learning assessment.
Under the new system, 20 percent of a candidate’s final grade is derived from school-based continuous assessment, with the remaining 80 percent based on final examinations. The blended grading model is intended to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of learners’ abilities, shifting focus from purely exam-centered performance to sustained academic engagement.
Education stakeholders will be closely analyzing the results to assess how effectively schools have implemented the new curriculum and whether the grading system reflects its intended outcomes.
Rising candidate numbers and gender shift
Enrollment figures from the 2025 examination cycle reveal a total of 432,025 registered candidates, marking a 12.1 percent increase compared to previous years. The data also highlights a notable demographic development: female candidates accounted for 51.5 percent of the total registration, surpassing male candidates.
This shift signals continued progress in gender parity within Uganda’s secondary education system and may influence broader conversations about access, retention, and performance trends among learners.
As the official release approaches, attention is turning to performance patterns, regional comparisons, and overall pass rates, all of which will shape public discourse in the education sector. The results are expected not only to determine the next academic pathways for thousands of students but also to provide critical feedback on national education reforms.
With institutional leadership newly reconstituted and curriculum reforms still in early implementation, the 2025 UCE results are poised to serve as both an academic milestone and a policy barometer for Uganda’s evolving education landscape.
