UPC Celebrates Its 63 Years Of Existence As A Political Party
The opposition Uganda People’s (UPC) is celebrating its 63rd anniversary this month. The party President Jimmy Akena says UPC is proud of its contribution to the socio-economic transformation of Uganda and he pledged that the party will continue on that path.
The UPC founding President, the late Dr. Apollo Milton Obote received the instruments of power for Uganda’s Independence on 9th October 1962.
The UPC President Jimmy Akena who addressed the media at the party headquarters in Uganda House said the party has contributed significantly to Uganda’s post-independence journey, especially to improve the health and education sectors.
The Hon. Akena, who is also the Lira City East MP, appealed to the government to improve funding to the Universal Primary and Secondary Education Programme and expand and reconstruct schools. He also raised concern that education now appears to be the preserve of those who have money, leaving out the poor.
On the issue of corruption, the UPC party president called for the political will in government to fight corruption and heavily punish the offenders, otherwise, scandals will continue emerging.
The Hon. Akena said that the UPC is in the final preparations to hold its National Council meeting and key among the issues for consideration for policy proposals will be youth unemployment, underemployment, labor export, and food security.
The Council meeting comes as UPC marks its 63rd anniversary following its founding on 9th March 1960 after merging with the Uganda People’s Union.
