Uproar In Nwoya: Over 20 Women Lose Lives As Roads Remain Unrepaired
In Nwoya District, frustration and despair are growing as residents struggle with the severe inaccessibility of their community roads. With only a fraction of the 401 roads in the area repaired over the past 15 years, many crucial roads are now impassable, especially during the rainy season.
This has led to tragic consequences, including the death of over 20 women in the last seven months, as they attempt to reach hospitals for safe deliveries.
As the situation worsens, the people of Nwoya are pleading for immediate government intervention to upgrade their roads and ensure better access to healthcare, education, and other vital services.
Communities in Nwoya District are urgently calling for government intervention to improve access roads. Due to poor roads and broken bridges, many women are giving birth along the way, while children struggle to access schools and healthcare.
In October 2024 alone, over six women delivered on the roadside due to slow transport to health facilities.
The latest incident involved 25-year-old Gloria Adoch, who delivered along the Apala-Agung road in Toodora Parish, Anaka Subcounty, last week while being transported to Anaka Hospital due to the poor condition of the road.
Opiyo Denis Geoffrey, District Councilor for Anaka Payira Sub county in Nwoya, says over 300 households are unable to access government services due to the poor state of community roads in Olam Apala and Agung A.
Lanyero Christine, a businesswoman and resident of Nwoya, says the community is not lazy but lacks support to improve their situation. She mobilized culverts and encouraged locals to repair the bridge themselves in an effort to address the issue.
Nwoya District has over 501 kilometers of roads and 338 bridges, including central, district, and community roads, all in dire condition and in urgent need of repair.
Over the past seven months, 20 women have tragically died while struggling to reach hospitals for safe deliveries, while more than 81 women have given birth along the way as they navigated the poor roads to access healthcare.
