URA Urges Traders To Embrace E-Receipt System To Ease Tax Payments And Business
Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has launched the “Mpa e-Receipt Yange” Competition' where the e-receipts of clients will be collected after they buy goods or services and they then stand a chance to win assorted prices.
The URA Commissioner General, John Musinguzi Rujoki, who presided over the launch, said that the e-receipt system will not only improve tax compliance but also ease doing business.
Musinguzi urged the business community to embrace innovation and to ensure that consumers demand their e-receipts to improve compliance in the payment and refund of Value Added Tax (VAT).
The core duty of the Uganda Revenue Authority is the assessment, collection, and administration of taxes, fees, and Non-Tax Revenue (NTR) in the country.
URA, in Partnership with Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA)-Uganda has launched the e-receipt system which is intended not only to show proof of purchase but also to ease tax compliance, especially in the payment and refund and refund of Value Added Tax (VAT). It also makes accountability simpler.
John Musinguzi Rujoki, the Commissioner General of Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) pledged that URA would intensify the sensitization of traders on the new e-receipt system. He appealed to traders to embrace it not only for their own good but also for tax collection and ultimately national development.
He also noted that the process had not fully taken off due to lack of Electronic Fiscal Device Machines but that challenge has now been addressed.
Thaddeus Musoke Nagenda, the Chairperson of KACITA-Uganda, said that the association would work with URA in raising awareness on the e-receipt system and general tax compliance among traders.
URA has come up with a number of innovations to improve tax compliance and widen the tax base. At less than 18 percent, the ratio of Uganda’s tax to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is one of the lowest in the East African Region.
