Victims Of Wagagai Gold Tunnel Demand Compensation

Residents of Asopotiot B village in Sikuda Sub County in Busia district are demanding compensation over the accident they got in the underground tunnel under Wagagai Gold Mining Company.

These have appealed to the government of Uganda to come up with laws that can protect worker’s lives in gold refineries.

Sande Wilberforce, an employee in the sand mining company, narrated how he was knocked by a wheel loader truck in September 2024 while working and sustained several injuries to his body.

He made a revelation on the situation in the underground tunnel: the Chinese mistreat them by tasking them with lifting heavy machines and walking long distances underground. In all this he calls for compensation

Frank Kasumba resident noted that there is need for both the district and parliament to come up with laws that shall help put the lives of employees safe in gold refineries.

LC3 chairman Buteba subcountry, where the gold refinery is located, voiced that as leaders they are working hard to advocate for the rights of workers.

He expects situations to change. The deputy RDC stated that the situation in Wagagi Gold Mining Company is now beyond their level.
