We Are Getting A Recycling Plant To Fight Poor Waste Management – Kampala Minister

Minister of Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs, Hajjat Minsa Kabanda has said her office, in partnership with Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA), intends to purchase a recycling plant in an effort to promote proper waste management in the Kampala district. This was announced during the launch of the "Keep Kampala Clean" campaign in Makindye Division today.

The current metro area population of Kampala is 3,846,000, a 5.31% increase from 2022.

In the country’s capital alone, it is said that approximately 0.2 metric tons of waste per person is generated annually, hence amounting to nearly 740,000 metric tons of solid waste generated each year.

Time and time again, Kampala is reported to consistently face issues resulting from poor waste management, with only 41% of its waste said to be properly collected and disposed of, exposing a sort of laxity within the city’s authority.

The light of the "Keep Kampala Clean" campaign, the Minister of Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs, Hajjat Minsa Kabanda, said that they intend to work with KCCA to purchase a recycling plant to manage waste properly.

She called on authorities in government positions to stop politicizing their duties and work together for the good of the country at large.

Kampala minister urged the community to learn how to put dustbins to use, and to stop throwing rubbish on roads in order to assist in the proper waste management campaign.

Representing the Mayor of Makindye Division, Josephine Mulamata, explained some of the challenges faced by casual workers while they clean the city streets.

Meanwhile, the Kampala minister urged citizens to promote proper hygiene and fight poor waste disposal that tends to contribute to the flooding of roads during rainy seasons as rubbish is thrown anywhere.
