Why Kabaka’s Lake Is Fighting For Survival:Restoring Kabaka's Lake: Buganda Moves To Fight Pollution And Encroachment.Buganda Launches Campaign To Restore Kabaka's Lake Ecosystem.

The Buganda Minister for Culture and Norms, Dr. Anthony Wamala, has launched the Kabaka's Lake Restoration and Protection Campaign at Kabaka's Lake in Ndeeba. The campaign seeks to restore the lake's ecosystem by addressing environmental challenges, including pollution, waste disposal, and encroachment on the lake shores. The initiative brings together the Buganda Kingdom, environmental authorities, and communities to protect one of Buganda's most important cultural and natural sites.

For years, Kabaka's Lake has stood as a symbol of Buganda's history, culture, and environmental heritage. But increasing human activity around the lake has threatened its existence, with pollution, waste disposal, and encroachment affecting its natural environment.

It is against this background that the Buganda Kingdom has launched a restoration campaign aimed at bringing back the lake's former glory.

The Buganda minister for culture and norms, Dr. Anthony Wamala, says the lake is more than a cultural landmark; it is also an ecosystem that supports biodiversity, attracts tourists, and provides a source of livelihood for surrounding communities.

The restoration program will be implemented in phases, with efforts focusing on cleaning the lake, protecting its shores, and working with environmental agencies, including NEMA and KCCA, to manage pollution and protect the waterways that feed into the lake.

The kingdom says the decline of the lake has been worsened by activities such as illegal construction near the shores, dumping of waste, and failure to properly manage the surrounding environment.

Through the traditional concept of Bulungi Bwansi, which encourages voluntary community service, residents were encouraged to take part in protecting the environment by keeping the lake and its surroundings clean.

The Buganda Kingdom says it plans to further develop the lake as a tourism destination while ensuring environmental conservation benefits both the local community and the country.

The Buganda Kingdom says today's launch marks the beginning of a wider restoration plan aimed at returning Kabaka's Lake to its former glory while preserving its cultural, environmental, and economic value. The Kingdom adds that the success of the campaign will depend on continued community participation and commitment to protecting the lake beyond today's clean-up exercise.
