Dr Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, has emphatically reiterated their dedication to upholding the privacy of the public, dismissing allegations that digital number plates are designed to encroach upon their personal lives.
He also launched the 2024 Data privacy campaign by the Personal Data Protection Office (PDPO) under NITA-U, which spoke towards the implementation of the Personal Data Protection and Privacy Act (2019), and advocacy for the proper use of confidential information accessed by various institutions.
About the introduction of digital number plates in the country in late 2023, the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Dr Chris Baryomunsi, addressed concerns regarding privacy infringement.
He clarified that the purpose of these plates is not to monitor individuals' movements, but rather to enhance security measures.
Furthermore, Stella Alibateese, the Director of the Personal Data Protection Office (PDPO), has addressed the purported complaints regarding the mishandling of customer confidential data by telecom companies. In her response, she emphasized that certain actions and investigations conducted have demonstrated that these companies are indeed operating within the boundaries of the law. Alibateese also highlighted the lack of awareness or disregard shown by service subscribers who fail to thoroughly review the terms and conditions set forth by the service providers.
Dr Baryomunsi further emphasized the need for the professional handling of private information concerning individuals, highlighting that the Personal Data Protection and Privacy Act (2019) will be enforced accordingly.
Regarding the upcoming international NAM and G77+ summits, the minister emphasized the significant role of technology, particularly the advanced WiFi 6, in the preparations. Furthermore, the minister urged the people of Uganda to refrain from politicizing these events and instead focus on unity and effective representation.
Today, the 2024 Data privacy campaign was also launched by Dr Baryomunsi, ahead of the annual data privacy day to be commemorated on 28th January under the theme, “stop, think, own your privacy”. PDPO officials noted the prospects behind the initiative.
