Youth Urged to Embrace Fish Farming for Income Generation: Fish Farmer Says Venture Requires Low Start-Up Capital. Government Asked to Subsidize Fish Feeds

Youth have been encouraged to embrace fish farming as a profitable business with a ready market both within Uganda and across the region. Fish farmers say the enterprise requires relatively low start-up capital and minimal expenditure on fish medication but are calling on the government to increase support for the sector, particularly by subsidizing the cost of fish feeds.

As unemployment continues to affect many young people in Uganda, fish farming is increasingly being promoted as a viable business opportunity capable of generating sustainable incomes.

Fish farmers say the enterprise can be started on a small scale with affordable capital and expanded over time as production increases.

At the Aquaculture Service Centre in Kajjansi, experienced fish farmer Godfrey Ofono says fish farming has transformed his livelihood while creating employment opportunities for others.

He encouraged more young people to venture into aquaculture, noting that the business has a reliable market both locally and in neighboring countries.

Ofono urged Ugandans, especially the youth, to take advantage of the opportunities available in fish farming instead of waiting for formal employment.

He explained that the business does not require excessive capital to start and that farmers spend relatively little on fish medication when proper management practices are followed.

He further noted that demand for fish continues to grow, making aquaculture one of the country's promising agribusiness ventures.

However, Ofono identified the high cost of fish feeds as one of the biggest challenges affecting the sector.

He appealed to the government to increase support for fish farmers and subsidize fish feeds to make the business more affordable and profitable.

Fish farmers say increased government support and affordable fish feeds would encourage more young people to invest in aquaculture, creating jobs, improving household incomes, and boosting Uganda's fish production.
