The manager of Public Relations at the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), Osbone Tushabe has said that over 7000 national ID applicants have been held back from acquiring ID after inappropriately acquiring registration.
This was while he responded to the confiscation of at least 10,000 IDs by NIRA, as reported last week by Simon Mundeyi, the Immigration spokesperson.
Tushabe also went on to clarify that they work with other government structures during ID processing, and the root cause of the mischief of illegal ID acquisition starts from the l government office level.
During the weekly media briefing at police headquarters in Naguru, the manager of relations at Nationathe l Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), Osbone Tushabe, noted that they have stopped listing at least 7680 national ID applications.
In Uganda, for someone to acquire citizenship by birth, one must have stamps and signatures appended by chairpersons LC1, Government Security Officers (GSO), and District Supply Officers (DSO) of districts.
Tushabe added that the large number of incompetent persons acquiring IDs is partly the fault of local government authorities, who do not take time to do their roles and investigate the people they are enabling to get citizenship. He called on them to do the needful.
He also explained however that those stops listed can be assisted. He also explained the criteria for one to end up in that category.
That aside, Police spokesperson Fred Enanga has confirmed the call by the Ministry of Health for police to resume drunk driving operations across the country to reduce road carnages that claim many lives of Ugandans on a daily basis.
