Evicted Bukinda Residents Urge Government For Resettlement Or Compensation
A section of people who were evicted from Bukinda in Kyangwali sub county Kikuube district are appealing to the government to help resettle them or be compensated.
The individuals, comprising mostly of children and women, gathered in Kakumiro on Saturday to seek an audience with Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja in their quest for justice. They have since been residing at the Kakumiro NRM house.
The individuals, led by Mbambali Fred, assert that they have endured a distressing eviction from their ancestral land in Bukinda, Kyangwali, which lasted for more than two years. They further claim that they have not received any form of compensation for the forceful removal.
According to Mbambali, the office of the Prime Minister was responsible for their eviction in 2013, and since then, they have been left without a home and without any assistance.
However, the Resident District commissioner Kakumiro (RDC) Maj. (Rtd) David Matovu met the evictees and advised them to seek redress in relevant offices.
Matovu says that he convened an emergency security committee meeting to discuss the issues and it was resolved that these people immediately vacate the area and return to where they came from.
Matovu says that camping at the Kakumiro district NRM house is risky because of sanitation and security reasons.
By press time all the people had vacated the NRM premises in Kakumiro with others returning to Kikuube while others were seen walking to other destinations.
The Prime Minister in December 2021 visited the contested land in Bukinda to find a lasting solution to the issue.
