Farmers Encouraged To Join Cooperative Unions For Development

Farmers in Greater Luwero have been urged to take cooperate unions as a priority intervention to achieve social economic development since unions simplify resource mobilization, employment, increased production and value addition.

This call was made by the chairperson of Bulemeezi Heritage Cooperative Union Micheal Bukenya while monitoring coffee farmers from the three counties of Luwero district which includes; Bamunanika, Katikamu North and Katikamu South.

Bulemeezi Heritage Cooperative Union has 658 farmers from the three districts that make greater Luwero including Luwero, Nakaseke and Nakasongola. These farmers have over 121.5 million trees of coffee which highly contributes to the annual harvests of 9.5 million sacks of coffee from the Central Region.

Farmers from this region face similar challenges and it is upon this, that they have decided to come up with a  cooperative Union to enable them to identify possible solutions to their challenges.

In a bid to revamp cooperative societies in the region, Michael Bukenya the Chairperson of the Bulemeezi Heritage Cooperative Union urged farmers to come together and work hard to achieve a common goal for the betterment of farming in the region.

Aisha Nakalawa the coordinator of Bulemeezi Heritage Cooperative Union noted that the union intends to involve farmers doing small-scale farming especially coffee farmers to ensure that no one is left behind.

Nakalawa further added that the flow of information related to farming in Greater Luwero is slow because farmers are scattered which leads to some farmers missing out on opportunities and benefits from the government.

Cooperatives play a key role in poverty reduction, helping members to easily access financial capital and other agricultural inputs from the government and private organizations, it also creates a market for members' produce.
