Former Speaker of Parliament Probed Over Illicit Enrichment: NRM Drops Hon. Among As Candidate for Speakership. President Museveni Warned Among to Stay Away from Corruption
CID officials ambushed the home of hon. Anita Annet Among, the former speaker of the 11th parliament of Uganda, in Kampala city on May 16th at 2 30pm after accusations of misuse of office and public funds due to an unusual display of wealth.
The probe was ordered by the president of Uganda on allegations of misuse of office, especially public funds. Raids were made at her homes in Kampala central business district as investigations on the allegations take shape
At about 2:30 pm on Saturday, May 16th, Security operatives cordoned off the residencies said to belong to the former speaker of parliament, Hon Anita Annet, among other things, confiscating billions of money and luxurious vehicles after President Museveni ordered a probe against her on grounds of fund misuse and abuse of office
Hon. Among, through her official communication platform, x, declared over the weekend that she would not be contesting in the upcoming speakership race. She, however, noted her availability to serve in any other position if called upon by her party, the NRM.
This came after a rather timely video surfaced online, where the honorable. Daudi Kabanda of Kasambya County was congratulating Hon. Jacob Oboth Oboth upon being selected by the party as the next candidate for speakership.
Until recently, Ugandans had little to no idea that their speaker of parliament was owner of over 3 mansions in the city, one said to be in Ntinda, another in Nakasero and a vast palatial residence overlooking the lakeside in Kigo
About two years ago, president Yoweri Museveni had called out Anita, asking her questions related to where she gets funds and warning her not to get into any trouble related to corruption
The Rt. Hon speaker has always denied allegations of involvement in corruption and misuse of public office strongly stating her intolerance for such behavior through her posts on social media
Earlier videos of the former speaker of parliament surfaced, where she openly stated that she was interested in the seat for one more term after which she would hand the seat over to Rt Hon. Thomas Tayebwa who served alongside her as deputy speaker
Still on social media, many old videos of her making statements that she still had another term to serve before giving office to rt hon Thomas Tayebwa, the current deputy speaker, surfaced.
