HON. Kabayanga Pushes For Girls To Acquire Skills In Making Reusable Pads To Combat Dropout Rates
The district of Kasese has joined the worldwide commemoration of International Women's Day. The event was hosted in Mpondwe Lhubiriha town council at Mpondwe primary school in Bukonzo County West, Kasese district.
It has been identified that the growing number of school girls discontinuing their education in Mpondwe Lhubiriha town council is a result of the lack of sanitary pads.
Minister Kabbyanga, who presided as the guest of honour, emphasized that while the Government may not have the means to provide sanitary pads to girls in schools, equipping them with practical skills will help decrease the dropout rate among girls.
Challenges school girls face during the menstruation period have been one of the factors that contribute to school dropouts which results in early marriage.
Assimwe Zainabo, the senior development officer for Mpondwe Lhubiriha town council, disclosed during the women's Day celebrations in Bukonzo county, west Kasese district, that the town council is grappling with a significant issue of young girls discontinuing their education due to the difficulties they encounter during their menstrual cycle.
Amid the celebrations honouring women, Edwin Mazima, the programs officer of Solid Links Initiative, has called upon the Government and NGOs to pay attention to the empowerment of boys while emphasising the importance of fostering a balanced and well-behaved society, as the focus seems to be predominantly on the girl child at present.
Reacting to the concerns about girls dropping out of school, the state minister for ICT and national guidance Godfrey Kabbyanga noted that there's a need to introduce a sustainable approach to educating school girls on making reusable pads while at school.
