Legislators Express Hope for Integrity in New Parliament: MPs Outline Expectations of Good Governance in New Term. MPs Commend Free and Fair Election of Parliamentary Leaders
The 12th Parliament of Uganda has officially commenced, with Members of Parliament convening at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds for the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker. Presided over by Chief Justice Flavian Zeija, the sitting saw Rt. Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth Oboth was elected Speaker, and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa was confirmed as Deputy Speaker. The orderly process drew praise from legislators, many of whom expressed optimism that the new leadership will deliver integrity, accountability, and a corruption‑free Parliament.
The day marked the 1st Sitting of the 12th parliament at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, where Members of Parliament gathered together to participate in the election of the Speaker and the Deputy Speakership position presided over Chief Justice Flavian Zeija who oversaw the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker in accordance with the Constitution.
Congratulatory messages followed the newly elected Speaker Rt.Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth Oboth and the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa after the two contestants were successfully voted in for the 12th Parliament.
In interactions with legislators, it was observed that the election was conducted freely and fairly, without any incidents of chaos. Many Members of Parliament expressed optimism, noting that the Speaker’s pledges including a corruption‑free Parliament and a commitment to integrity as they had positive expectations in the coming term.
Some Members of Parliament, speaking after their first sitting in the 12th Parliament, outlined expectations of good governance under the newly elected leadership, expressing hope that the new term will deliver integrity and accountability.
With the election of Rt. Hon. Jacob Oboth Oboth as Speaker and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa as Deputy Speaker, Uganda’s 12th Parliament begins its journey under new leadership. Legislators holding a lot of expectations, are positive for a greater term setting the tone for a term that many hope will strengthen governance and restore public trust in the institution
