Makerere Law Students Encouraged To Nurture Multiple Skills

Students at the Makerere School of Law have been urged to nurture multiple skills while at university which will also enable them to have diverse talents and therefore widen their income streams.

The call was made by several experts in various fields who addressed the students during the Career Day at the Law School, organized by the Makerere University Law Society

The Career Day was held under the theme: “Becoming a Multi-disciplinary Lawyer: Strategies and Success Stories.

Appreciating that the world was moving fast in the digital era where technology is driving many changes, the Managing Partner at KTA Advocates, Asmahaney Saad encouraged students at the Makerere University School of Law to build networks while they are still in school. She advised the students to make as many friends as they can because those friends will come in handy in the future and could partially determine their destinies.

Saad noted that the young generation should be willing to volunteer whenever they are given the chance to offer any service to society because they have the energy and need to learn many positive things

Tony Otoa, the Chief Executive at Stanbic Business Incubator Ltd urged the students to be humble and authentic as soon as they join the job market. He explained that appreciating one’s weaknesses and strengths is key and will enable one to stand out.

With the emerging dynamics in the job market, the Chief Legal and Corporate Affairs Officer at the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), Peter Muliisa encouraged law students to keep relevant to society. He also appealed to them to adapt fast to the changing dynamics in the sector through engagements, mentorships, and acquiring multiple skills.

Career guidance can be important to university students through the provision of valuable insights into the working world, receiving a diverse set of skills that can be applied to different roles and situations to support students navigate the challenges of university life and later in their work life.
