Mother With Hearing Impairment Stuck In Hoima Hospital

A mother with a hearing impairment has been stuck at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital for the last four (04) months. No one has so far come forward to state where she came from.

The unnamed mother was brought into the hospital on 20th January 2023 by unnamed Good Samaritans from Masindi district, according to the documents the Masindi Police Family and Children’s Protection Unit found on her.

Ritah Mbabazi, in charge of the Postnatal Ward at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, said that they received the mother a day after she delivered a baby in the compound of Masindi Central Station.

Mbabazi added that according to another account, the mother was dumped in Kiryandongo by a Link bus driver whose identity was not readily available.

Mbabazi says the hospital has taken care of the mother for the last four months but they are concerned about her well-being and that of her four-month-old baby boy who is about to begin crawling.

Dr. Charles Birungi, a health officer at the hospital says that at such a young age, the child needs to be with relatives to socialize instead of staying in a confined facility.

The Hoima Hospital authorities want to reunite the mother with her relatives but they have failed due to communication difficulties.

Lucy Akugizibwe, a senior medical social worker at the hospital says they have engaged different sign language interpreters near the hospital but they have failed to locate the mother’s home area.

According to Akugizibwe, the little they have gathered so far, the woman seems to have lost her husband in a conflict.

However, she has a photo that has her two sisters who seem to have taken it during an S.4 leaver’s party. Akugizibwe said that the hospital does not have the funds to help trace the home of the mother.

The Hoima Hospital management appeals to anyone who may know any of the woman’s relatives to reach them at 0774-328-385 or render any assistance.
