
Over 1,500 Homes In Amuru District Drink Direct From River Nile
Over 1,500 households in Lakang Sub-county, Amuru District are suffering from waterborne diseases since their key source of water for drinking and domestic use is directly from River Nile.
The area has a population of over 5,000 people who are mainly engaged in fishing as their key economic activity. The residents say they are spending a lot of money on treating stomach and other diseases.
Happy Karungi, a resident of the Tee-Okutu landing site in Amuru District, said that many members of her family have on several occasions suffered stomach pain. She has been spending a lot of money on treating herself and family members suffering from diseases contracted through drinking contaminated water.
Akello Jackline also narrated her experience of treating Bilharzia with symptoms including vomiting blood which she said almost claimed her life because even the nearest health facility is a long distance health away from her home.
Oringa Anthony, the Lakang Sub-county chairperson said that the Sub-county council has included the need for clean water in their work plan for 2023.
