State Minister Kacudu Explains New Grading Systems

State Minister Kacudu Explains New Grading Systems

Parliament has advised the education ministry to embark on mass sensitization to aid the public’s understanding of the just released 2024 UCE results in the new grading system under the revised curriculum.

This came as the Minister of State for Primary Education, Dr. Moriku Joyce Kacudu, tried to explain the details of the results during today's plenary session.

Yesterday, the education ministry released the 2024 UCE results of the first batch of candidates examined in the new competency-based assessment that showed that 350,146 (98.05%) of the candidates qualify for the UCE certificate.

It should be noted that a UCE student’s final scores (released by UNEB) are combined in ratio of 20% continuous assessment through O’ Level, and the 80% end-of-cycle exam hence, arriving at an achievement level indicated by letter grades unlike the divisions used in the previous curriculum.

In this case, the letter grades A mean the student’s performance is Exceptional, B(Outstanding), C(Satisfactory), D(Basic), and E(elementary). This letter grades indicate the extent at which the student can apply in real life, the knowledge and skills obtained in each subject. For example: if a student gets grade D which stands for Basic, he or she can on a basic level apply what he or she learnt from O’ Level in real life.

To the effect of having Result 1 showing on the UCE certificate, a candidate must have obtained a competency level grade D (Basic) in at least one subject out of the 8 subjects while, those who will get Result 2 indicates that the student did not fulfil the condition or did not complete project work, and for Result 3, the student did not meet the minimum of grade D (Basic) in all subjects.

Despite Minister Kacudu attempt to submit, Parliament advised the education ministry to embark on mass sensitization to aid the easy understanding of the results instead of keeping the discussion to the house.

On a light note, speaker Among applauded UNEB, teachers and students for their ability to adopt to the new curriculum, congratulating them on the results achieved.

The minister is expected to return to house next week Tuesday with an elaborately explained report on the results reading.
