Uganda Moves to Ban Polythene Bags to Combat Rising Plastic Pollution
Kampala, Uganda — May 6, 2025 — In a bold move to curb the devastating impact of plastic waste on the environment, Uganda's National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) is advocating for a total ban on polythene bags across the country. This initiative is part of an ongoing effort to update Uganda's environmental laws and promote sustainable practices.
According to Dr. Barirega Akankwasa, NEMA’s Executive Director, Uganda generates approximately 600 metric tons of plastic waste daily. Alarmingly, only 9% of this waste is recycled, with the overwhelming majority ending up in drainage channels, rivers, and Lake Victoria. This unchecked pollution threatens wildlife, contaminates water bodies, and endangers public health.
Legislative Steps Forward
The proposed amendment to Uganda’s National Environment Act aims to completely outlaw the use of polythene bags. The bill, currently in the final stages of parliamentary review, has garnered support after extensive public consultations. Once enacted, it will mark a significant step toward cleaner, healthier communities.
Environmental Concerns and Public Impact
Dr. Akankwasa emphasizes the urgent need for action, citing the environmental damage caused by non-biodegradable polythene. The low recycling rate exacerbates the problem, with more than 79% of plastic waste directly polluting the environment.
Global Responsibility and Local Action
As Uganda prepares to join the world in celebrating World Environment Day on June 5th, 2025, under the theme “United against Plastic Pollution,” these efforts reflect a shared global commitment to safeguarding nature and promoting sustainable development.
Looking Ahead
NEMA continues to push for amendments that will strengthen environmental protections and foster innovative solutions for waste management, paving the way for a cleaner, greener Uganda.
